Baby boomers and the Tv. Exploring Digital culture

Baby Boomers and the TV

Every generation, as special as it is, contributes something new and unique to the evolution of technology. The biggest of seven generations are Baby Boomers, born between 1944 and 1964. They are known as digital immigrants, growing up with new digital appearance such as the first computers and the pre-cellphone technology such as radio, landline phones and television. This paper is going to go through the use of technology by baby boomers, more specifically the use of television as one of the main technologies they grew up with.

Baby boomers owe their name to the baby boom (an increase in the birth rate) that happened in some English-speaking countries after the world war two. It is known that between 1945 and 1965, 76 million North American kids were born, being almost 40% of United State population.

Baby boomers have seen massive changes in terms of technology. They were introduced to it in the 60’s but it didn’t have an important impact on their daily life. It was seen as something that only academic people used. However in the 80’s technology started to invade peoples home and it was mainly used to improve customer behaviour and for people to make more informed decisions. Baby Boomers are also known for being great consumers, using credit cards to buy television, hi-fi systems and new cars.
